20th Century Fox has released the second theatrical trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In it, the foundation of Caesar, the leader of the ape rebellion is laid out. A highlight of this trailer, as in the first, is the lifelike modeling of the primates by Weta Digital, which could be argued is the best the industry has seen to date. Also added is the new tagline: Evolution Becomes Revolution.
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. The Planet of the Apes franchise gets the origin treatment in this 20th Century Fox production from director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist). The script, written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, concerns a group of American scientists whose genetic experiments lead to an uprising by a race of intelligent apes that they helped create. James Franco stars, with Freida Pinto and John Lithgow heading up the rest of the cast.

lanet of the Apes is a 2001 American science fiction film, based on Pierre Boulle’s novel and a remake of the 1968 film of the same title. Tim Burton directed the film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, and Estella Warren. It tells the story of astronaut Leo Davidson crash-landing on a planet inhabited by intelligent apes. The apes treat humans as slaves, but with the help of a female ape named Ari, Leo starts a rebellion.
Development for a Planet of the Apes remake started as far back as 1988 with Adam Rifkin. His project nearly reached the pre-production stage before being canceled. Terry Hayes’s script, titled Return of the Apes, would have starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, under the direction of Phillip Noyce. Oliver Stone, Don Murphy, and Jane Hamsher were set to produce. Creative differences ensued between Hayes and financier/distributor 20th Century Fox. Chris Columbus, Sam Hamm, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, and the Hughes Brothers later became involved.
With William Broyles, Jr.’s script, Tim Burton was hired as director, and the film was put into active development. Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal rewrote the script, and filming took place from November 2000 to April 2001. Planet of the Apes was released to mixed reviews, but was a financial success. Much criticism focused on the confusing ending, although Rick Baker’s prosthetic makeup designs were praised. Despite its financial success, Fox chose not to produce a sequel, but has decided to reboot the Apes franchise altogether with Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
