More Machete Poster Goodness!

More Machete Poster Goodness : 220 × 150We’ve been keeping you up to date with all manner of Machete news, images, trailers and TV spots lately. Here are some of the recent posts.

Well, as they say, the hits just keep on coming. We now have a further set of posters from IMP Awards and they are every bit as subtle and sophisticated as you would expect from a film about a man wielding all manner of bladed weapons.

We’ve got Machete himself, with more knives than you can shake a stick at, Robert De Niro ready with twin 9mm’s, Michelle Rodriguez with a gun the size of Old Painless in one hand and Lindsay Lohan, in a nun’s habit, licking the barrel of an absurdly proportioned six-shooter. Tasteful. Classy.

The Freebie Gets a Poster

The Freebie Gets a Poster : 186 × 150Yesterday I posted a new trailer  for The Freebie which has the basic premise that a married couple’s sex life is going down to the toilet so they decide to have one night where anything goes.

Personally, I think the whole idea for the movie is a pretty sad one and I’m sure that whatever happens, it’s all going to end in tears (haven’t they seen Indecent Proposal?!).

Wah Do Dem Review

Wah Do Dem Review : 220 × 150If you’re a budding filmmaker with the good fortune to have won a cruise ticket what do you do? The answer is Wah Do Dem, a mumblecore odyssey written and directed by Ben Chace and Sam Fleischner.

We follow Max, played by Sean Bones, as he boards a cruise after his girlfriend (his intended cruisemate) dumps him and the film tracks his journey all the way to Jamaica, where things go wrong. That’s pretty much it. What the film gets right are some beautifully captured moments of emotional angst, though these are almost lost between the languid trawl of characters and locations, all pointing to some deeper meaning, but rarely attaining it.

Superhero Me Review

Superhero Me Review : 220 × 150Superhero Me may not be a film that you’re familiar with but I assure you, once you see it, it won’t be a film that you’ll forget! It’s the brainchild of Steve Sale, a Sound Engineer (turned Superhero!), and follows his quest to becoming a superhero. You may have come across the movie as it premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival earlier this year.

It first came to my attention when a friend of mine (James Prescott) mentioned that he was going to be in a movie. He told me that the movie was mostly shot around where we live, in Sutton / Epsom in South London. It was around the time when Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass was released in the UK, and since we were massive fans of the movie here at HeyUGuys, it was a movie I was very much looking forward to.

Resident Evil : Afterlife Preview

Resident Evil - Afterlife Preview : 220 × 150HeyUGuys have just this moment returned from a top secret, phone-confiscating (and jolly exciting) preview of footage from Paul W S Anderson’s Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D at Sony.  I type this coverage with the indentations from Sony’s state-of-the-art 3D specs still visible on the bridge of my nose and the adrenalin from the Axe Man’s attack still pumping in my veins!

Milla Jovovich’s Alice continues her hunt for survivors in the wake of Umbrella Corps’ lethal virus.  For the fourth episode in the all-action series, an old friend joins her in pursuit of a new lead that takes them to Los Angeles in search of sanctuary.  The city though is riddled with the Undead and Alice and her comrades fall into a deadly trap.  The scene previewed for us today was a wet and bloody confrontation with a masked Axe Man.  The 3D sequence demonstrated the extraordinary capabilities of James Cameron’s Avatar technology and offered a glimpse of the immersive zombie rollercoaster that is Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D.

Film4 FrightFest 2010 - Burning Bright Review

Film4 FrightFest 2010 - Burning Bright Review - 220 × 150With just a little knowledge of English poetry you may get the impression from the title that this film has something to do with tigers and you’d be right. One tiger in particular, as the film has a premise that screams high concept exploitation. Kelly (Briana Evigan) awakes from a nightmare to a real life nightmare where she is trapped in her house with a very angry and very hungry Bengali tiger.

Kelly’s stepfather Johnny (Garret Dillahunt) has bought the tiger, using the money set aside for Kelly’s autistic brother’s special schooling, as he is planning to open a safari park at his house. This part of the film is a little far fetched and, as it is probably immediately obvious, this and a few other plot points are a little contrived which makes the plot a little hard to swallow. It is a testament to the filmmaking on display though that the film is gripping and enthralling despite this. Amusingly the seller of tiger is played by Meat Loaf in a small role that I’m sure helped out with the financing but he is also quite entertaining.

Film4 FrightFest 2010 - Day One – Hatchet II, Primal & Dead Cert

Film4 FrightFest 2010 - 451 × 300The first day of Frightfest began with the disappointing news that the BBFC had demanded cuts on both I Spit on Your Grave  and A Serbian Film. The cuts on I Spit on Your Grave totalled 43 seconds and the cuts on A Serbian Film were 3 minutes and 48 seconds.

Frightfest organisers decided that the cuts were too much for A Serbian Film and decided to pull the film, but have decided to go ahead with the screening of I Spit on Your Grave. Very disappointing news, especially considering the more relaxed approach the BBFC have been taking recently. You can find the official statement from the BBFC here.

Anyway, bad news over and on with day one… America, Australia and the UK were all represented during the first day of FrightFest 2010 with three world premieres. Adam Green’s Hatchet II opened the festival and was followed by the Australian horror Primal and British vampire flick Dead Cert.

Wishful Thinking - Action Con-220x150After waxing poetic about my love for The Expendables, and quite frankly, all things action yesterday I got to thinking about all of the different conventions that take place.  After searching the Internet I found loads of different cons.  Anime, Sci-Fi, Comic, Horror and more specifically, Star Trek and Twilight related conventions.  I’ve been to two of the former and none of the latter…thank goodness.  I can’t leave out mentioning the big daddy of cons, Comic Con.  Sadly I haven’t had the opportunity to attend, but next year is going to be the year.

I Goggle’d, Yahoo’d and Bing’d my way through researching all of these different cons,  and I couldn’t find a single con devoted strictly to action movies.   Our writer Craig brought to my attention that there is something in North Carolina called ActionFest and that looks pretty darn cool.  However that looks more like a festival and less like an actual con.   Regardless, anything that Chuck Norris shows up to has to be awesome.

Plot Summary: "What If..." tells the story of Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo), who fifteen years ago left his college sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson), and his calling to be a preacher, in order to pursue a business opportunity. Now with a high-paying executive gig, a trophy fiancée, and a new Mercedes, he hasn't considered a family nor felt the need to set foot in a church in fifteen years.

But God has other plans. While on a thrill ride outside the city, his new car mysteriously breaks down, and hes visited by a tow truck driver named Mike (John Ratzenberger) who claims to be an angel sent to show Ben what his life would look like had he followed his true calling. Suddenly Ben wakes up in the middle of domestic chaos as his wife Wendy and daughters (including Disney Channels Debby Ryan) are getting ready for church, where Ben is the new pastor.

Before he can get back to his old life, Ben must first embrace this reality and discover the value of faith and family, and perhaps restore his love for those who were heartbroken fifteen years ago: Wendy and God. In the tradition of "Its a Wonderful Life" and "The Family Man," "What If..." is a story of finding your true purpose in life.

Discovered after the war, the unfinished work, with no soundtrack, quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record, despite its elaborate propagandistic construction. The later discovery of a long-missing reel complicated earlier readings, showing the manipulations of camera crews in these "everyday" scenes. Well-heeled Jews attending elegant dinners and theatricals (while callously stepping over the dead bodies of compatriots) now appeared as unwilling, but complicit, actors, alternately fearful and in denial of their looming fate.

Plot Summary: One of the most prolific and acclaimed directors of the Philippine New Wave, Brillante Mendoza has created another virtuoso exploration of the volatile Manila slums. The camerawork in this verité portrait of petty thieves and hustlers is fluid, sweeping, and seemingly untethered, as frantic as the overcrowded shacks and ditches it captures. Mendoza (2009 Cannes Winner, Best Director for "Kinatay") uses this hybrid fiction essay not to judge the questionable acts of his fringe-dwelling characters, but to subtly implicate political and religious institutions as a source of their problems.

Plot Summary: Based on rock author and punk expert Alan G. Parker's best-selling book "Sid Vicious: No One Is Innocent."

"Who Killed Nancy" is a new documentary by Alan G. Parker looking into the demise of Nancy Spungen – was it her boyfriend, punk icon Sid Vicious; was it Nancy herself; or was it one of the unsavory junkie/dealers in and out of their room that night of October 12, 1978, at the Chelsea Hotel!

On October 12th, 1978, Nancy Spungen, an ex-prostitute, sometimes stripper and heroin addict, was found dead in a bathroom at the ChelseaHotel in New York. She also happened to be the girlfriend of the Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious, who was quickly accused of her murder. Less than 6 months later, he died of a heroin overdose and the case was closed.

The death of Sid and Nancy has passed into rock legend and has only added to the controversial and notorious image of the Sex Pistols and punk music.

At the request of Sid's mother, who committed suicide in 1996, Alan Parker has devoted himself to discovering who killed nancy, by interviewing 182 people – from former sex pistol Glen Matlock to Howie Pyro, a 'face' on the NYC punk scene who was present on Sid's last night alive - and re-examining NYPD evidence, he investigates what really happened that night in room 100.

Responding to the question, "Do we finally find out just 'who killed Nancy' in room 100 at the Chelsea Hotel, Parker responds: "I think we get as close as any human being is likely too! We didn't leave any stones unturned, and we discovered more new information than I personally thought we were going to."

To the celebrities he pursued, photographer Ron Galella was the beast who threatened beauty. As it turned out, he gave them a strange and lasting beauty they might never have known without him. Inherent in the story of this notorious paparazzo are the complex issues of the right to privacy, freedom of the press and the ever-growing vortex of celebrity worship. He sneaked around and invaded and bribed and held up his camera and shot till he dropped (or someone dropped him). His was the artistry of the sniper. Yet Galella found something essential in his real-life subjects, and he gave it permanence.

Plot Summary: Before the Tea Party movement had a name, author Thomas Frank’s controversial New York Times bestselling book “What’s the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America” explored the rise of conservatism in his home state of Kansas and exposed the contradictions of the movement. Based on Frank's book, director Joe Winston’s critically acclaimed feature length documentary What's the Matter with Kansas? similarly deals with the ascendancy of conservatism and how conservative political strategists won the hearts and minds of Americans, a movement now more visible and very much in effect all across America today. The film adaptation, with its vivid characters and their unforgettable stories, sheds light on the national debate over who the conservatives are, where they come from, and why they continue to wield influence.

Plot Summary: Filmmaker Tamra Davis charts the meteoric rise and fall of her late friend, the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, born in 1960. In the crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO. In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with "rock star status." In 1985 he and Andy Warhol become close friends and painting collaborators, but they part ways and Warhol dies suddenly in 1987. Basquiat’s heroin addiction worsens, and, tragically, he dies of an overdose in 1988. The artist was 25 years old at the height of his career, and today his canvases sell for more than a million dollars.

With compassion and insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, a painter of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody. Combining never-before-seen interview footage of Basquiat with commentary from friends and art-world luminaries, the film offers a moving portrait of one of the leading lights of late 20th century art.

Plot Summary: A multi-award-winning, uplifting feature-length documentary chronicling the International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, hosted by The Van Cliburn Foundation.

Top amateur pianists from all over the world, ranging from self-taught to classically-trained, aged thirty-five to almost eighty, convene in Fort Worth, Texas for a week of competition, music and camaraderie.

Entertaining and above all, inspiring, the film provides an intimate look into the lives of these colorful, multi-faceted competitors as they strive to balance the demands of work and family with their love of music. Years of dedicated preparation culminate in top-level performances before a professional jury and discerning audience during three nerve-wracking elimination rounds.

All of the film's heroes have made their careers outside of music in fields ranging from medicine to business, and professional tennis to education. For competitors who have faced such extraordinary challenges as drug addiction, AIDS, or political asylum, the competition is also a triumph over adversity. For all, it represents an overwhelming desire to express a deeper side of themselves, musically and otherwise.

Commentary from noted American pianist Van Cliburn and gold medalists from the Foundation’s professional competition, along with outstanding performances of great classical masterworks—from Beethoven to Alkan and from Rachmaninoff to Barber—complement the action in a film that celebrates the creator and the competitor in each of us.
