Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for Another Earth. I’m not quite sure what kind of movie it is. Based on the trailer, it would seem that scientists discover a parallel universe where the inhabitants are the exact same as here on Earth. The main character (played by Brit Marling) applies to visit the other Earth but at the same time she meets and falls for a man (played by William Mapother). I’m not sure if it’s sci-fi or drama/romance. Or a combination of both. Or maybe the guy is an “other” who comes to Earth to steal her baby. That would be cool. Continue to watch and try to see for yourself.

The Alfred P. Sloan Prize, given at Sundance each year, seems a bit arbitrary, although I’m sure the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation who funds it, would argue otherwise. It’s a $20,000 cash prize given to a feature film that focuses on science or technology as a theme, or depicts a scientist, engineer, or mathematician as a major character. There’s wiggle room in that definition, however. The prize in 2005 went to Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man. I don’t think too many people would argue Timothy Treadwell was any of those things. This year, Sundance recognized Mike Cahill’s sci-fi film Another Earth for the honor. Cahill cowrote the script with Brit Marling who starred as a smart girl, about to enter MIT when the decision to drink and drive changes everything forever.
In ANOTHER EARTH, Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.
