No Strings Attached is just what it sounds. It is exactly what you would expect out of a movie with the kind of name and it ticks true to both its title as well as the genre. The plot of the movie revolves around the lives of its two protagonists with very different takes at life, yet they obviously share a mutual attraction, as happens in all movies.
Well coming to the story, Ashton Kutcher (Adam) plays a young and very dud-ish television writer who falls for a beautiful doctor (Emma) played by Natalie Portman. Her complete and evident disinterest in pursuing a relationship with him is what propels him to offer her a no strings attached relationship which includes lots of sex minus the regular and usual morning breakfasts and exchange of sweet nothings. What the movie scores about is the theme, where they finally portray a woman who is not ping for a long lasting love and happy forever ending and would much rather be a practical and rational example of a real flesh and blood woman, as they exist in the real world. Agreed, the plot is kind of cheesy, but a romantic comedy does not really leave much scope to edge out the cheese, so if you are cheese digger, the movie will come across as amusing for sure.
Coming to the performances, Ashton Kutcher has done just what he does, play the romantic lover boy to the hilt with the right jokes and well time punchlines. Nothing out of the ordinary though. Supporting roles by Mindy Kaling and Greta Gerwig who play Portman’s roommates are worth a mention for sure, they do succeed at cracking up the audience. Natalie Portman has had such a good year with an engagement, pregnancy and Oscar nomination, that this role and performance disappoints her fans.
