The Mechanic (2011) is a remake of 1972 Charles Bronson snoozer. It has enough style and vi0lence mix to conform to the B-movie image of Jason Statham. Though the movie has borrowed the basic template of Michael Winner’s original, it clearly improves on original’s slothful pace. Simon West’s ‘The Mechanic’ is about one Arthur Bishop (Statham) who is a “mechanic” (a.k.a. hitman). His precision workmanship is put to use(rather misuse) by a shadowy corporate organization run by Dean (Tony Goldwyn).
Dean employs Bishop for hush-hush jobs where he has to deal with a variety of baddies that include a Colombian cartel bigwig, a gargantuan assassin and a murderous borderline-pedophilic religious cult leader. Bishop adheres to a code that hinges on professional efficiency and complete detachment. However that code is put to test when his next target turns out to be Harry McKenna (Donald Sutherland), a longtime mentor who is accused by Dean of being a traitor. Driven by guilt, Bishop ignores his life’s rules and recruits Harry’s son, Steve (Ben Foster), as his apprentice. Bishop teaches him the finer points of eliminating marks with minimal mess. However Steve ignores the elimination of marks part of lesson. Though the duo’s rote dynamic forces the narrative toward increasingly predictable places, Foster’s scruffy & volatile energy plays nicely with Statham’s stoic & methodical brutishness.
West’s glossy direction is conventional and keeps up brisk momentum. An excellent blend of blues and hip-hop cuts brings verve to perfunctory character-building sequences like corresponding Statham and Foster sex scenes that are fast, rough, and to the point. Statham’s routine remains engagingly brusque and, in this instance, more nuanced than Bronson’s earlier blank turn.
Goldwyn’s suit-and-tie villain distinguishes himself through cool bravado, as when he informs a rogue Bishop, “I’m gonna put a price on your head so big that when you look in the mirror, your reflection’s gonna want to shoot you in the face.” Watch The Mechanic movie online
