In the so-called 'Late Show Wars,' Conan O'Brien might have been the latest casualty, but he has since bounced back with his own TBS talk show and a new documentary "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop," which premiered at SXSW 2011 this week.
In the post-Johnny Carson world of "The Tonight Show," what had been a funny, late-night tradition for millions of insomniacs turned into a talk show battlefield. David Letterman, who had considerable clout with NBC, admired Carson quite a bit and made no secret that he wanted the reins of "The Tonight Show," but that honor went to Jay Leno in 1992. The in-house fighting at between Letterman, Leno's camp, and NBC was documented in "The Late Shift," an HBO original movie based on the book of the same name.
When the smoke cleared, Letterman moved his show over to CBS, Leno settled comfortably in Carson's chair while a new kid called Conan O'Brien was filling Letterman's "Late Night" slot. Within a few years, O'Brien earned a devoted following and was named Leno's heir apparent for the coveted "Tonight Show" gig. Leno's 2009 'retirement' didn't last long, however, and he returned to the show he hosted for 17 years. O'Brien didn't agree with NBC's machinations, so they handed O'Brien a hefty cash settlement and showed him the door. Watch English Movies Online
"Conan O'Brien Can't Stop" fills the gap between O'Brien's late night departure and his return to the talk show arena in 2010. Director Rodman Flender followed his friend around as the comedian prepared for his "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour." Appearing at the March 16 screening of the documentary, Flender said he had accumulated 149 hours of unedited footage of Conan on the road.
Flender captures O'Brien at his best and worst, and the "7 Stages of Grief" model for recovery plays a big part in this documentary. Facing a 6-month non-compete clause in his contract, the popular talk show host sits on the sidelines, and not even his settlement from NBC can ease that pain. O'Brien wants to stay connected with his fans, coming up with the multi-city comedy tour as a way to get back in the game. It's a brilliant plan and, as the film shows, most venues sell out within an hour of O'Brien tweeting about it.
