Watch The Whistleblower Full Movie Free Online

 Watch The Whistleblower Movie Online

The Whistleblower I was ready to chalk it up as another "inspired by a true story" feature wallowing in the misfortune of others as one person faces hardship in the face of many to set things right. It's a familiar narrative that doesn't make a film of this nature anything special and, for the most part, The Whistleblower is merely mediocre. But Rachel Weisz delivers a starring turn that gets better and better as the film wears on providing one reason for praise.

Making her feature film debut, The Whistleblower is directed and co-written by Larysa Kondracki and she has put something together that is not for the faint of heart. Set in 1999 it follows the true story of Kathy Bolkovac (Weisz) as she trades in her position as a Nebraska police officer for a job as a peacekeeper working for the United Nations in Sarajevo. Her decision was primarily money-based, but once she gets there she soon lands a position as the head of the U.N.'s Gender Office and stumbles onto a sex trafficking scandal involving members of the U.N., fellow peacekeepers, local police and just about every other authority in the region.

Kathy is forced to work through opposing factors such as the fact most of the guilty have diplomatic immunity and the girls that are being treated as "whores of war" are too afraid to speak out for reasons you will see in scenes that are disturbingly graphic. One scene in particular involving a lead pipe is so audibly disturbing, and goes on for so long, it's quite hard to take.

In April 4th of 2010, Quintanilla family was found murdered in their country side house. Police reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded evidence. “Atrocious” shows the real images of such evidence. Quintanilla family traveled to their old farm house in Sitges, where Christian and July investigated about the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods. Both of them used to record all day whatever they did.
On the fifth day of their arrival they were found dead under strange circumstances. ATROCIOUS shows the last five days of life for Cristian Quintanilla and his siblings. It also shows the strange situations that they lived in those moments and which remain unexplained.
The Slamdance Film Festival (which is sort of the meth-head nephew of the Sundance Film Festival) used to screen films at theaters in Salt Lake City, but a few years ago they moved their whole operation to the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City, in an obvious attempt to take advantage of Sundance‘s sloppy seconds. Skeptical of the new digs, I didn’t attend the Slamdance festival for several years, and missed 2008’s Paranormal Activity as a result, a fact that devastated me at the time.
(Until I actually watched Paranormal Activity, that is, and realized how little I’d missed out on.) Slamdance has been frantically fondling itself ever since Paranormal’s unlikely (and some would say, undeserved) catapult to the top of the indie flick box office, desperate to recreate that level of success. Which may partially explain why Atrocious––a very Blair Witch-ey found footage flick with Paranormal Activity undertones––was accepted into this year’s festival.    Watch Atrocious Movie Online

Having never before attended a screening at Treasure Mountain Inn, I have to say, I was extremely disappointed in the venue. (Let me apologize in advance for this one-paragraph rant…if you choose to skip to the end, no hard feelings). Padded metal chairs were stacked in Army-tight rows on a barely inclined surface. Because the chairs rows were aligned perfectly––and not staggered––the ONLY thing you could see was the back of the head of the person sitting in front of you. People stretched and leaned to see more of the screen. Experienced journalists crowded the aisle, sitting on the snow-soaked floor, since that was the only way to really watch the movie, but I was not privy to such secrets.   To View The Full HD : Free movies to watch online

One subjective factor in movie reviews that we often cannot avoid is the state of mind the viewer is in when s/he sees the movie. I saw Limelight the first time on Valentine’s Day with a girl I had never dated before and was puzzled as to why she was moved to tears at several instances during the show.
Five years later and 2,000 miles away we again saw the movie, having left our 2 toddlers home with a baby-sitter. This time we both found it very emotional, and also paid a great deal more attention to the plot, the performances, etc. Now on February 14, I think of the film again, as we both still do every year, including 1962 when our 3rd child was born on that day.
I suspect our mention of Limelight to others because of our peculiar circumstances has caused a number of them to see it, as when we mention Chaplin’s name in the context of a serious role many people are surprised. Many apparently think of him only as a slapstick comedian, which any reader of these comments already knows is far from the truth. There should be some way of conveying this information in an intentional way to persons who have a similar mindset.
Perhaps what I am saying is that if you really value this film, it behooves you to make that known to friends. We have seen many films that proved to be very meaningful to us only by recommendation of others, in many cases movies that we would never have seen on our own volition, because of a misleading title, or the inclusion of actors who were known more for their popularity in a genre we did not care for.
The reason we saw Limelight the first time – remember we are talking about 1953 – was that we wanted to go to the movies and this was what was being shown Thank God it wasn’t Dracula or King Kong. Nowadays people not only have multiple choices at the theaters, they have DVDs and VHS tapes galore.   Watch Limelight Movie Online

Breslin is Janie Jones, a 13-year-old with an addict for a mother (Elisabeth Shue). When mom decides to get clean, she opts to leave Janie with her father, semi-rock star Ethan Brand (Alessandro Nivola). Too bad Ethan doesn’t even know he has a kid. Despite being unconvinced he’s really the father, when Janie’s mother bails, Ethan is left with no choice but to bring Janie aboard his tour bus.
World, watch out for Abigail Breslin. Thanks to nine years of work, we know she’s a talented actress, but Janie Jones really proves she’s on another level. The film not only reveals her as an incredibly talented singer, but as an actress who can take a subpar script, breathe life into it and make it somewhat enjoyable.
Janie isn’t troublesome in the least; it’s her father that causes all the problems. Not only does he stomp around unwilling to accept the fact that he has a child, but his drinking gets out of control as does his attitude. When his escapades become too much to handle, Ethan’s band and manager decide it’s time to part ways leaving Ethan and Janie alone.

Ethan is dubious about Mary Ann’s claims, but Mary Ann takes off for a stay in rehab and leaves Janie with Ethan, forcing him to take the girl on the road with him. Watch Bag of Hammers Movie Online
A dicey blend that generates viewer goodwill but can’t make its conflicting vibes gel, A Bag of Hammers will play best with the most soft-hearted viewers provided they don’t mind rooting for unrepentant felons. Theatrical prospects are modest despite the commitment of a talented and recognizable cast.
Working with a script he co-wrote with star Jake Sandvig, first-time director Brian Crano starts off strong, offering funny, well timed dialogue between Sandvig and Jason Ritter as Alan and Ben, childhood friends who grew up to be grifter roommates.
Their scams aren’t believable (how many times can you steal cars by posing as valets in the same location?), but they’re sufficiently amusing to support what appears to be a lovable-lowlife scenario. They also allow for an entertaining, uncredited cameo by Amanda Seyfried.
The setup isn’t immediately threatened when a single mom (Carrie Preston) and her scrappy son Kelsey (Chandler Canterbury) move in next door; the kid, in fact, has enough street smarts and curiosity to serve as a foil for the grown-ups.
But the fractured family brings with it heavy themes this lightweight skeleton struggles to carry. Kelsey is being neglected by his desperate, short-tempered mother, and after Alan’s sister Mel (Rebecca Hall, who appeared in both of Crano’s previous short films) calls Child Protective Services, a sad chain of events begins that results in the mother’s suicide.
Plenty of successful comedies have put an abandoned child in the care of unprepared adults, but the abandonment itself is usually dispatched with as little drama as possible. Hammers, by contrast, draws the angst out to fill much of its running time — offering multiple glimpses of the mother’s wince-worthy job interviews, going behind the scenes with child-care agents and turning Ben and Alan’s decision to essentially kidnap the child into the plot’s main conflict.
Hall, whose character tolerates her brother’s crimes but is herself a straight arrow, is most successful in finding a middle course through the movie’s conflicting modes. She takes things seriously from the start, emphasizing Mel’s realist maternal impulses. But she can’t sell it all herself, and the script simply asks too much of Ritter and Sandvig.
Crano doesn’t help toward the end, when he resorts to a couple of painfully maudlin shots of Kelsey, and the tale’s contrived happy ending rings incredibly false.  Watch Bag of Hammers Movie Online

You know the old tale about the slacker ne’er-do-wells who are suddenly forced to face responsibility. Tales is more appropriate, and of course you do. Now, remember the last time you were faced with such a film and it turned out to be the kind of honestly funny and sweet tale that is often failed by pandering filmmakers? Brian Crano’s A Bag of Hammers turns out to be that rare tale that surprises in its maturity while never losing the reality of leopards trying to change their spots.   To View The Full HD : Free movies to watch online

It took 42 years for filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson to make !Women Art Revolution. There’s a good reason for that: She was a leading participant in the Feminist Art Movement and her informative documentary begins in the 1970s. Acquired by Zeitgeist Films, it’s a vigorous mix of interviews, art, film footage and video.
Indicative of its power, the film has also screened at the Toronto and Berlin international film festivals, a rarity. It is truly a must for university arts archives and other artistic institutions.
!Women Art Revolution smartly mixes the dynamics of the emerging feminist movement of the late ’60s with the prevailing male chauvinism of the arts world at the time. Leading museums rarely included female artists; indeed, women’s presence in such galleries was usually limited to their appearance as nude subjects of male paintings and sculpture.
In this comprehensive and vibrant historical fabric, we view the evolution of the movement, from its earnest/angry genesis in the 1970s to its embrace of humor as a weapon against the male-dominated arts establishment during the 1980s. It has always been a richly conflicted progression, indeed, a key ingredient of its power and metamorphosis.
Near its finish, contemporary female artists and curators lend perspective and appreciation for the movement, realizing they are the enriched descendants of such courageous artistic talents as Barbara Kreuger, Cindy Sherman and Shirin Neshat.
An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, !Women Art Revolution deftly illuminates this under-explored movement through conversations, observations, archival footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators and critics.   Watch Women Art Revolution Movie Online

The long wait is finally over. The truth is finally revealed. "The X-Files: Fight the Future", the first feature film based on the immensely popular television series, has finally hit the theaters. But was it worth the wait? Does it reward the dedicated fans, so-called X-Philes, by making the elaborate government/alien conspiracy mythology arc transparent? Or does it pose more questions than it answers? Are the snippets of revelation consistent with the information previously established in the series, or as many pundits believe, is it obvious that series creator Chris Carter is making it up as he goes along? And more importantly, regardless of its lineage to the show, does "The X-Files: Fight the Future" stand on its own as a good movie?

For those that have followed the series, the fifth season finale had the work of FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), the X-Files, being shut down. Furthermore, their office had been set on fire by the shadowy Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), destroying all traces of their paranormal investigations over the last five years. When the film opens, Mulder and Scully have been reassigned to an anti-terrorism unit under the supervision of Special Agent Darius Michaud (Terry O'Quinn, a regular on sister series "Millennium"). While in Dallas, Texas investigating a bomb threat to a federal building, the FBI is unable to defuse the bomb in time, which results in several deaths and millions of dollars in damage. Looking for a scapegoat, Mulder and Scully are pulled before an inquiry looking into their actions during the investigation.   To View The Full HD : Free movies to watch online

Bellflower Full Movie Online

Bellflower Full Movie Online

One of the first feature films we (both Ethan and I) saw at Sundance 2011 was an “apocalyptic love story” titled Bellflower, named after the street it mostly takes place on in LA. It’s written, directed by, and stars, Evan Glodell, who was also responsible for building props and vehicles in the film, including a Mad Max inspired flame-spitting car and homemade flamethrower. It’s a story about a guy who meets a girl and their subsequent break-up but told through an apocalyptic and visually-stylistic lens, literally meaning they used homemade cameras and old lenses. Watch a video review that Peter from /Film, Ethan & I recorded below.
Here’s a better description from the Sundance 2011 guide: Bellflower follows two friends who spend their time building flamethrowers and other weapons in the hope that a global apocalypse will occur and clear the runway for their imaginary gang, Mother Medusa, to reign supreme.

And therein lies the disconnect that kept me from really liking Bellflower. As a narrative it’s deeply flawed, which I could get over, but the thematic dissonance was impossible to get past for me. It’s a movie that pretends to be about one thing but is really about something completely different, and as a result its final conclusion feels fake and half-hearted and most of all like a cop out.
The film is about two friends who, without visible means of support, spend their days drinking and fantasizing about living in a post-apocalyptic world. Very specifically the post-apocalypse of The Road Warrior, where they hope to be as badass as Lord Humongous. They spend their time modding cars and building flamethrowers (again, despite having no visible means of support). One friend is unbelievably irritating and wimpy while the other is an annoying, destructive asshole, but at least he’s a lot of fun.  Watch Bellflower Movie Online
Things begin to change when the irritating friend, whose voice keeps cracking like Bobby Brady, meets a crazy girl at the local bar. She’s a bad wild girl, and together they do bad wild things, like drive from California to Texas just to eat at the most disgusting and filthy restaurant ever. It feels like this is probably supposed to be a destructive relationship, but since the guy has a car with a built in whiskey dispenser, destructive is probably a relative term .To View The Full HD : Free movies to watch online

While waiting for the destruction to commence, one of them meets a charismatic young woman and falls in love—hard. Quickly integrating into a new group of friends, they set off on a journey of betrayal, love, hate, and extreme violence more devastating than any of their apocalyptic fantasies. We’ll be sure to let you know if it gets picked up for US distribution.
Bellflower is the movie equivalent of those GOP lawmakers who rail against homosexuality and keep rentboys on the side. It wants to be a movie about growing up and leaving behind childish concepts of masculinity, but it also wants to wallow in those childish concepts and have a fucking kick-ass car and an amazing flamethrower, and it wants to mostly sell those elements to you.

In the dusty small town of Elandsdoorn, a South African township not far from Johannesburg, life is simple and serene. A prevailing sense of deep pride tightly bonds together the entire community - but beware to those who step out of line... 12-year-old Chanda is a hardworking promising young student with a bright future, but her life changes dramatically when her baby sister unexpectedly dies. Heartbroken, Chanda's mother, Lillian, in turn becomes severely ill.

Her stepfather drowns himself in alcohol, leaving the young girl to take care of her two smaller siblings. Meanwhile, the formerly friendly neighbors become increasingly distant and gossip spreads. "Auntie" Tafa does what she can to help by getting Lillian to leave town, but not even "Auntie" is immune to the cloud of fear filtering across Elandsdoorn. Suspecting that the community's irrational ostracism has to do with her mother's illness and the death of her baby sister, Chanda demands answers but is met with stubborn silence. Unwilling to bear the weight of secrecy any longer, Chanda sets out to face a deeply engrained, unspoken taboo...

As part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival here in Toronto, my lovely wife and I made our way down to the TIFF Lightbox to take in “Life, Above All“. It’s a South African film which, according to the synopsis, is about “a young girl [Chanda] in a small, AIDS-ravaged South African township who struggles to maintain a façade of normal life amidst utter instability: her stepfather is an alcoholic, her newborn sister has recently died, and her mother has become afflicted with the AIDS virus.”

The community turns against the family and Chanda’s best friend, Esther, who has to turn to ‘whoring’ to make money after her parent’s deaths. The story is a powerful one and a snapshot of some of the devastation that HIV/AIDS can wreak. Still, I think there were some further things to draw from the film that haven’t been touched on in other reviews.  Watch English Movie Online

As one review states it, the movie is a “slightly soft lob to conscientious liberal audiences with a weakness for adorable, poverty-stricken kids”. Every movie tells a story and, beyond that story, is an underlying message. Even those cheesy popcorn action flicks have messages that are being portrayed – there’s no such thing as a story without a meaning or, multiple meanings. So how do filmmakers choose to tell the story and shape the message?  In the case of poverty, or HIV, or war, or just about any other human rights issues, the story tends to be told through “adorable” kids.

My comment after the movie was just this, “How can we tell a different story of HIV/AIDS?” Or even further, a different story of South Africa or Africa as a larger body. How often is it a story of children triumphing over the odds of brutal Africa? Or brutal slums of India? I’m not sure that there’s anything inherently wrong with telling these stories. What Human Rights Watch was very right about in their brief presentation is this: HIV/AIDS is very much a human rights issue despite it’s frequent portrayal as merely a medical or sexual issue. It strikes those how have been made the most vulnerable (through gender, location, disability, etc, globalization, etc…) who then, being vulnerable, have the least access to treatment. So in this way, the stories of children and women are important to tell – they are the ones bearing the brunt of the burden.

Welcome to a new feature here at Historical Tapestry - From Ink to Screen.

Really it's just a chance for us to post about movies that are coming out soon or we have already seen that are based on historical fiction novels.

First up, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

I love Lisa See's books so it was such a thrill to see that a movie is being made of her book. I have to say though, the trailer didn't really do a lot for me, particularly due to the introduction of a modern storyline. I will make an effort to watch it in the hope that it will capture some of the magic of the book.

Disney refurbishes a franchise that's been one of its reliable little goldmines for half a century with Winnie the Pooh. A seamless narrative rather than a collection of segments in the manner of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1977, this gentle, lovingly wrought, for-tots-and-parents-only resuscitation of A.A. Milne's characters may have unintentionally set a Hollywood record of sorts: It's 69 minutes long, including 10 devoted to the credits, meaning that 14.5 per cent of the running time details who worked on the film, including production babies (arguable feature length for the program is reached by tacking on a six-minute opening cartoon, The Ballad of Nessie, about the Loch Ness monster's self-created lake of tears).

Whether or not Disney Animation always intended that the feature proper would come at under an hour, the film will be a first weekend matinee choice for more than a few preschooler families (there's no weeknight audience for it) before becoming a staple homevid and TV title. The defiantly low-tech offering bows in France on April 13, in the U.K. and Germany the next day and in seven other territories in advance of the July 15 U.S. launch.

So definitive are the soft, simple, pastel evocations of the English countryside in E.H. Shepard's original Pooh illustrations that revisionist versions would be unthinkable. Directors Stephen J. Anderson and Don Hall (director and a writer, respectively, on Meet the Robinsons) do nothing to rock the boat, delivering rich, beautifully rendered visual backdrops for the mild antics of the familiar characters.

And familiar they are, for anyone who's been on the planet for more than four or five years. On renewed acquaintance, Pooh's obsessive search for bottomless amounts of honey and Eeyore's distress over having lost his tail possess limited resonance, as do the repetitive cutesy misspellings that dot the landscape. Unlike some other characters from children's literature and cartoons, Milne's sweet and docile creations seem like little more than stuffed animals given voice and of genuine appeal only to humans still attached to the likes of teddy bears and other cuddly sleepytime companions.  Watch English Movies Online

The music, too, represents a throwback, both the new compositions and the retreads of Sherman Brothers tunes here dressed up with new vocals by Zooey Deschanel. Little kids will enjoy it all, while parents, when not checking their cell phones, will be thankful for the thoughtfully brief running time.

David Yates; Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and others. Time: 2 Hrs 25 mins.

Today, November 19th, we saw the release of the movie on seventh and final novel in the Harry Potter series.

The film is all that the Harry Potter series is set to be a magical world with everything happening for the sake of magic. However it is set away from the school of magic and is all about the adventures of the three protagonists Harry, Ron and Hermione as they set out in search of the Horcruxes, the keys that are responsible for Voldermort’s immortality.

The Hogwarts background is done away with in this movie, as Dumbledore is dead and the ministry of magic is no longer allowed to thrive in Hogwarts. Thus, the adventures of the three begin. On the way to look for Horcruxes, Harry and his two friends accidently stumble on to the Deathly Hallows secret legend. According to the tale if the legend would come true then Voldermort could ultimately get hold of the power that he has been looking for all these years.

Thus it becomes very important for Harry and his two friends to quickly find the Horcruxes.

In the process Harry has to forget everything dear to him including his love for Ginny Weasely. However the road to the adventurous hunt for the Horcruxes there are moments of jealousy amongst the three friends, doubts, and ultimate victory of love.

Thus the adventures unfold with not a dull moment and which makes the viewer want to see the part II as soon as possible to know how Harry and his friends ultimately win over the evil forces.

Former boy wizard Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), now fully grown, appears in his darkest movie to date (thematically and literally). He and BFFs Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) scour a ravaged countryside searching for parts of Lord Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes') soul.

If you're a fan, it's everything you've wanted. If not, be aware that this isn't the movie to get started with.

The Bigger Picture: Big-budget sequels to kids' movies don't get much grimmer than this one, which begins with torture and a scary snake, features the deaths of major characters, constantly reminds us that others are being massacred, and generally has our heroes feeling hopeless about 90 percent of the time.

With almost every major player from the prior six in the series returning, at least briefly (notably excluding Emma Thompson, busy with Nanny McPhee; and Zoe Wanamaker, who asked for more money after the first one and was denied) and a heaping helping of new, unpronounceably named additions, it's tough enough to keep track—even if you have seen every film.

Leaving the confines of the Hogwarts magic school, Harry, Ron, and Hermione warp back and forth across barren landscapes with nothing but a TARDIS-like tent that's bigger inside than out, and Hermione's infinitely deep handbag.

Voldemort's hot on their trail, which he demonstrates by unleashing destruction anytime the trio ventures near friends or heavily populated events.   Watch English Movies Online
Director David Yates, who has gotten steadily better at these films since a shaky start on Order of the Phoenix, never lets us forget that we are seeing a world at war, albeit a magical one...and the good guys are losing.

Since this only the first of a two-part larger movie, it isn't really spoiling to say that they don't get much closer to victory as yet. With long stretches of actual character development between action sequences, and the pervasive scary and depressing atmosphere, this may not be a film to take younger children to. Not to mention there's a near-nude imaginary makeout scene which feels inappropriate, though certain fans of the leads have likely been clamoring for it.

A rich industrialist is brutally kidnapped. While he physically and mentally degenerates in imprisonment, the kidnappers, police and the board of the company of which he is director negotiate about the ransom of 50 million euro.

More conventional than his ambitious ‘Trilogy’ and less heart-on-the-sleeve than his caper/drama ‘The Right of the Weakest’, the versatile Belgian director Lucas Belvaux’s latest is, nevertheless, a tense hostage-thriller with a difference.

It kicks off in central Paris with its quarry, rich company chairman ‘Stan’ Graff (Yvan Attal) in full flight: dropping arrogant asides to his colleagues as he prepares to accompany the President of the Republic overseas, then dropping in briefly on his mistress in their secret flat before dropping a small fortune on a lengthier visit to the poker tables. When a Marseille-based gang kidnaps him the following morning, his company looks good for coming up with the €50 million ransom. But as the media, police and interior ministry interfere, his firm gets cold feet, the unions balk and his family’s sense of shock increases, his neck gets closer and closer to the chopping block.   Watch English Movie Online

Belvaux, aided by elegant work from cinematographer Pierre Milon, orchestrates an extensive and dove-tailing cast, the relay of information, dramatic police chases and swift changes of pace and negotiating stance with old-fashioned Melvillian sang froid and teasing emotional restraint. As we constantly intercut to a disintegrating Graff, the ironies of the unfortunate man’s menacing predicament are allowed to quietly compound (if not settle) in a pleasing counterpoint to the frenzied action outside. It’s obvious Belvaux is having fun in his impassive portrait of a poor little rich man undone by not only fortune and fate but his own misdeeds and blind arrogance; but the director is never so indulgent as to spoil what is a finely mounted thriller.

In this race-against-time thriller, the opposing philosophies of two men embroiled in a complicated love triangle with a beautiful woman (Tyler) escalate into a lethal battle of wills. Ultimately, the believer (Wilson) forces the non-believer (Hunnam) onto the ledge of a tall building. He gives him one hour to make a choice between his own life and someone else's, while a policeman (Howard) tries to convince him to come down. Without faith of an afterlife, will he be capable of such a sacrifice? "The Ledge" is a nuanced character study of love and conviction that will force you to ask how far you'd be willing to go for what you believe in.

Upon first reading about The Ledge, it felt like one of those classic Sundance Film Festival movies that could breakout and be a hit. It has a well-known cast, an experienced writer/director and a story that’s easily digestible. The story is about how and why a man on the ledge of a building is ready to kill himself, the cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard and the writer/director is Matthew Chapman, who wrote Runaway Jury, Color of Night and Consenting Adults.

And while The Ledge is filled with interesting characters, solid performances and even some smart, thought-provoking dialogue, the story itself wanders around like leaf in the wind, at times totally unaware of the driving force of the movie: the Ledge of the title. Read more after the jump.

Hunnam, best known for roles on Sons of Anarchy and Undeclared, plays Gavin, a hotel manager who befriends his next door neighbors Joe and Shauna, a religious couple played by Wilson (Watchmen) and Tyler (Armageddon). But before all that, Gavin is just a mysterious guy with a suicidal ultimatum. Stand on this ledge until noon and then jump off. If you don’t, someone else is going to die. A police officer (Howard) is there to hear the whole story and he’s not having a good day either.

For Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day), the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston) into dust. In 1973, scientist Professor Herbert Terrace embarked on an experiment to try to find out if a chimpanzee could learn to communicate with humans through sign language. The chimp - taken from his mum at just two weeks old - was called Nim, and James Marsh's emotionally charged documentary charts his story.

Featuring surprisingly candid interviews with the scarily large number of people who looked after Nim through his life, this is a sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing watch. With the help of the testimony of these 'carers' and a wealth of archival video and still photography - plus a few slightly sensational 'acted' segments - Marsh shows how this baby animal not so far down the evolutionary ladder from us was initially brought up as though he was human. This meant he had no contact with his own species for the first few years of his life, was taught to dress himself and use the toilet and was even breastfed by his first surrogate mother Stephanie LaFarge - "It was the Seventies," she says, in reference to her decidedly free-range household of the time.

In many ways, however, these were golden years for Nim because, at age five, he was thrust out of this environment and back into a primitive, caged existence at a university research facility, with much worse still to come.

Ideas of communication are front and centre of Marsh's documentary - not just in terms of the footage of Nim interacting with his various carers. We're also invited to take a long hard look at the scientists and others who looked after him. Much of their interaction with Nim caught on camera in the Seventies says as much about the ways in which he altered their behaviour them as the other way around. Marsh also uses his camera to good effect as he captures their recollections, lingering unflinchingly on them as they talk and dollying sideways away from them after they'd finished, as though moving on to another specimen in this zoo of memory. Much of this testimony is highly emotional and what emerges is a picture of botched and latently cruel, if on the face of it, well-meaning science.
