Watch Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Movie Online
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is a made for TV movie that scared the bejeeszus out of me. It was where my fear of tiny demons whispering in the dark truly began. In this tale of “woman moving to a big house in the country that’s been owned by her family for generations” the Farnums move to rural America only for Sally Farnum to encounter strange beings that lived in the chimney of her grandfather’s old study.
Take my word for it when Uncle Charlie tells you to leave well enough alone you best leave well enough alone! Of course Sally is left alone in the countryside as hubby climbs his way up the corporate ladder and no one quite believes her tales of being stalked by whispering assailants until it may be too late (come on I have to leave some suspense).
For years I remembered this movie which chilled me and my older brother to the very bone. Only on a trip out to Maryland did I find Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark again at a Wonderland used book and video store. I ended up paying $50 for a very well viewed VHS of my first childhood horror movie. Once I viewed it again I found it was just as scary as I had remembered. I have tried to coerce my brother to watch again but for some reason he just won’t budge on the subject and refuses to watch it. I guess it’s true what they say…The first scare is the best or at the very least the most memorable.
If you can find this movie I would definitely recommend viewing. I hear there is supposed to be a remake in 2005…not sure how good that will be but hopefully it will cause a re-release of this cult classic and maybe even a Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark DVD Release! Fingers crossed.
Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) a lonely withdrawn child has just arrived in Rhode Island to live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) at the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the sprawling estate the young girl discovers a hidden basement undisturbed since the strange disappearance of the mansion’s builder a century ago. When Sally unwittingly lets loose a race of ancient dark-dwelling creatures who conspire to drag her down into the mysterious house’s bottomless depths she must convince Alex and Kim that it’s not a fantasy—before the evil lurking in the dark consumes them all.
When a little girl (Bailee Madison) is sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the old mansion they are renovating she unwittingly unleashes malevolent creatures bent on destroying all of them.

Ranking with Dan Curtis’ Trilogy of Terror as one of the spookiest made-for-TV horror films of the 1970′s this atmospheric monster chiller stars Kim Darby and Jim Hutton as a comfortable reasonably happy young couple who inherit the archetypal “Old Dark House” from the wife Sally’s deceased aunt. While renovating the creepy mansion they enter a previously-sealed room which features a securely bricked-up fireplace. Despite the insistence of a local contractor (My Three Sons’ William Demarest) that they leave the room undisturbed Sally’s husband manages to open the flue releasing a horde of shriveled mini-monsters imprisoned there for decades.
The little demons immediately fixate their malevolent attention on Sally in an effort to claim her soul a mission which can only be averted by the love of her husband — which in light of his self-centered careerism means poor Sally’s pretty much on her own. Director John Newland manages to pull off this one-note premise with some effective frightening scenes — especially when he chooses to show as little of the goofy-looking monsters as possible — but it’s hard to sustain this level of suspense for a full 90 minutes.
