Aficionados will be familiar with acts like the Golden Gate Quartet, the Utica Quartet, the Dixie Hummingbirds and Sister Rosetta Tharpe—although the early footage here has rarely been seen—but for those that aren’t, this film will be a revelation. The legends are here too: Mahalia Jackson, Smokey Robinson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the Staple Singers. Foot-stomping and hand-clapping likely will start from the opening credits.

After screening at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Seattle International Festival and BAMcinemaFest here in my borough of Brooklyn, the gospel music documentary Rejoice and Shout will finally hit theaters on June 3 thanks to Magnolia Pictures. Reviewing the film from the San Francisco Festival Variety said the film’s “dazzling talent-display should exhilarate viewers regardless of religious leanings,” and another review called it “the definitive cinematic statement on American gospel music.”
Today we’re premiering the gorgeous new poster for Rejoice and Shout, an image that captures both the rich gospel history of the film and the humble church tradition that it sprung from. Having grown up in South Carolina I’m very familiar with that kind of white clapboard church at the center of the poster; there are some Sundays when you can hear the singing and clapping just from driving past them. It’s all but impossible to discuss African-American culture or America’s musical heritage without talking about Gospel Music. Just as the church was an integral part of the African-American community from the time slaves were first brought to the colonies, music played a crucial role in their spiritual experience from the beginning, and as various forms of African and rural music coalesced into gospel, gospel in turn became the foundation that later spawned jazz, blues, soul and even rap. And gospel music became the stepping-stone into the spotlight for many of music most influential artists, who in turn helped bring new ideas into the gospel sound, keeping it fresh and innovative.
