Follows a jealous countess, a wealthy businessman, and a young orphaned boy across Portugal, France, Italy and Brazil where they connect with a variety of mysterious individuals.
We’re introduced to João, an orphan boy living in a school operated by the church and looked over by Father Dinis. After an incident with another boy which leaves João ill, he wakes to find a woman at his bedside, a woman who calls him son. We soon meet the doomed Contessa, a woman who has been trapped in a loveless marriage. A bit of prying and a lot of crying later, Father Dinis tells the Contessa’s story which spans the film’s first two hours, a part one which ends on a cliff-hanger as the Contessa, now in a nunnery, questions Father Dinis’ association with a fellow nun he refers to as his sister.

In part two we come to uncover the mystery of Father Dinis’ past and the events that led him into the faith. I wish I could share the events that unfold but I left partway through the second half of the film. As well produced and interesting as Mysteries of Lisbon is, its major detraction is the four and a half hour running time. The epic, traditional tale (romance and mystery are staples of Portuguese romances and short run soap operas) has many twists and turns and a cast of characters each with its own interesting story but at the heart of it all, this is the tale of Father Dinis and to get there, in the format of a film at least, some chunks of story could have been left on the cutting room floor while still doing service to the story. A story teller with experience in both film and television, director Raúl Ruiz was looking to leave his mark on Portuguese and world cinema and his epic Mysteries of Lisbon, an adaptation of a much loved novel by Camilo Castelo Branco, certainly is a new achievement in feature length historical dramas.
It’s a story of romance and mystery, a tale where no one is who they say they are and what’s on the surface is only the beginning of the tale.
