Prince of Persia First Reactions - ShoWest 2010

The reactions are pouring in from the first screening of Disney’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The movie premiered at ShoWest and plenty of people are blazing the world of Twitter with their instant reactions to the film. Fans of the video game have thrown in their two cents as well as people who wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. Well, it’s time for Prince of Persia to be put on the chopping block so here it is…

For the most part, it sounds like people had high expectations for this film, which I believe was their first mistake. The majority of these tweets are comments of frustration and disappointment. This begs the question, did we all see the same trailers that have been gracing the internet for the past few months? Prince of Persia doesn’t look like the savior of the video game genre, hell it looks borderline campy!

The general consensus here is that the movie is mediocre, and that sounds like an accurate assessment. Just because Jake Gyllenhaal is doing backflips in the desert in the middle of a Jerry Bruckheimer film doesn’t mean it’s the be all, end all of action movies.

Here’s what we’re hearing through the grapevine so far…

  • SvenRump: Prince of Persia: a rollicking good time. Swords & Sandals 2010 Bruckheimer Style

  • Slashfilm: Feeling let down by Prince of Persia. The production design, cinematography, costume design all amazing. But the plot, characters and casting is kind of a mess.

  • FirstShowing: Prince of Persia was good, not great, pretty much exactly what I expected. It moved VERY quickly but was still long. Not enough parkour. I like the plot, but there’s so much going on it was confusing at times, felt a little rushed and messy, but wasn’t bad. Just good I guess.

  • Schofizzy: No surprise that PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME looks cool and that’s about it.

  • mattign: Just saw Prince of Persia. Fun movie.

  • bitmobshoe: Prince of Persia movie is a lot of mindless, summer blockbuster fun. The expected cliches were out in full force though.

  • entoncesmn: Prince of Persia is big and loud and and action-filled but all that didn’t make the story better.

It sounds like a typical, middle of the road summer movie to me. I’ll probably still go see it because I never put it up on a pedestal to begin with. My expectations for it have been pretty low since day one.

Repo Men Movie - Review

This weekend Oscar nominee Jude Law and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker will both take a step out of their comfort zones to star in a sci-fi action flick. Repo Men is the big screen adaptation of the novel Repossession Mambo by Eric Garcia who also penned the screenplay. With such acclaimed material on their hands and the original author on board with the script, how did this film turn into a convoluted and detached mess?

Someone needs to “repo” Repo Men stat…

The Players:

  • Director: Miguel Sapochnik

  • Writers: Eric Garcia (screenplay & novel), Garrett Lerner

  • Cast: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Liev Schreiber, Alice Braga, Carice van Houten

  • Cinematography: Enrique Chediak

  • Music: Marco Beltrami

The Plot:

The film takes place in a future where vital organs needed for transplant patients can be bought on credit. On the surface it sounds like a great solution to a horrible problem right? Wrong! If you can’t continue the payments on your new found heart, lung, or kidney they will send the repo men to get you. In this case Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are two of the top guys in the repossession business and their lives are about to be turned upside down when one of them is no longer the hunter, but the hunted.

The Good:

  • The Action: The fight scenes in this movie were intricate and well choreographed. There was a certain level of technical difficulty used that didn’t fall back on quick editing to give it impact. Plus, it made someone as pretty as Jude Law and tiny as Alice Braga look like they could take down an entire army.

  • Liev Schreiber: His character is, for lack of a better word, a slime ball but he plays him like a patron Saint. Schreiber was actually a breathe of fresh air amongst a bevy of bad performances from his co-stars who all missed the mark.

The Bad:

  • Forest Whitaker: What the hell was he doing in this movie? This man is one of the best actors of his generation but his talent was completely lost on this caricature he brought to the screen. His role was already written badly and his over the top performance didn’t help.

  • The Setting: Where does this movie take place? The landscape of the city looks like something out of The Jetsons yet the residential neighborhoods look like they’re from 1960’s suburbia. Plus, Jude Law has his British accent, Whitaker has a faux New York accent and Braga sounds like she’s straight from South America. If that wasn’t bad enough, the story takes place in this high tech world yet they’re using current model iPhones and cars.

  • The Lack of Chemistry: Are we supposed to care about the deep rooted “friendship” between Law and Whitaker because they were like oil and water. As a matter of fact, Law didn’t have chemistry with anyone including both his love interests, which made all of his relationships and motives seem forced and ridiculous.

  • The Story: This is a good premise with poor execution. It starts off with one basic idea and tries to add all these different elements of surprise that does nothing for the overall arc. There’s no build up which means there’s definitely no payoff, which leaves you with no interest.

Overall:

Repo Men is an unfortunate series of events strung together by action, decent special effects and a horrible script. I’d double and even triple pass on seeing this in theaters this weekend.

Rating: 3/10

Repo Men opens in wide release on March 19th.

The Bounty Hunter Movie - Review

In their latest romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter, Jennifer Aniston is lovely and Gerald Butler is an immature 12-year-old trapped in the body of a middle-aged man. Aniston is one of the ladies in Hollywood who’s taken up more rom-coms than anyone else, while Butler is slowly dipping his feet into the genre — he’s already got two under his belt (P.S. I Love You and The Ugly Truth). Now the duo joins director Andy Tennant, who like Aniston, has plenty of experience in the realm of unconventional love backed by hilarious circumstances.

Find out if these veterans made a film worth watching…

The Players:

  • Director: Andy Tennant

  • Writer: Sarah Thorp

  • Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Gerard Butler, Christine Baranski, Jason Sudeikis, Jeff Garlin, Peter Greene

  • Music: George Fenton

  • Cinematography: Oliver Bokelberg

The Plot:

Milo Boyd (Butler), a former cop turned bounty hunter is given the ‘gig’ of his dreams when he’s assigned to hunt down his ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurley (Aniston), after she skips court to work on a story. After very few attempts, Milo catches his ex-wife (mind you she does try to escape by running away in heels) only to find himself involved in some of her risky business. The two try to sabotage each other throughout until they find themselves on the run for their lives.

The Good:

  • Music: The music made this romantic thriller a bit enjoyable. There’s a wide variety of tunes in this film from Cage the Elephant to Ke$ha to Jerry Reed — whose song “She Got The Gold Mine (I Got The Shaft)” completely blew my mind.

  • Set Design: From the hotels to Nicole’s apartment, everything was so pleasing to look at. There was attractive wallpaper, pretty flowers, and extremely nice bedding. Usually I don’t pay too much attention to the set design the first time around, but in the case of The Bounty Hunter, observing the set was more interesting than observing the characters.

  • Supporting Actors: Jason Sudeikis plays an annoying yet likable character as Aniston’s co-worker Stewart, who happens to worship the ground she walks on. Despite the part he’s given, he manages to make you crack a smile. Peter Greene also gives a solid performance as Mahler (the bad guy). Ever since Pulp Fiction and The Mask, Greene has been acing the villain role, and this time he does it again.

The Bad:

  • Story: The story is very unoriginal — but then again, what can you expect from the guy who directed both Sweet Home Alabama and Fool’s Gold? There are so many questions involving the word ‘why’ that I want to ask. Here we have two great-looking and decent actors, but one lame romantic tale. I hate to say this but there really is no other way to put it: If you’ve seen Sweet Home Alabama, then you’ve seen Fool’s Gold and if you’ve seen Fool’s Gold, then you’ve seen The Bounty Hunter (it’s just set in and around Atlantic city). The problem with this story isn’t that it is completely fictitious, but that it’s annoying while being so fictitious.

Trailer:

Overall:

Good music, good design, and good acting don’t make up for a lousy story.

Rating: 3.5/10

The Bounty Hunter debuts in theaters on Friday, March 19, 2010.

DC Comic Movies To Replace Harry Potter, Will Be in 3D

A lot of interesting news has come out of the Warner Bros panel during ShoWest and one of the biggest breaks has to do with the culmination of the Harry Potter franchise. According to Collider, the studio has an exit strategy as to how they’ll lift their dependency from the JK Rowling series as their main source of blockbuster material. They’ve decided to turn to the properties under the DC Comics banner to carry them through the new decade.

At the Warner Bros’ ShoWest presentation, Alan Horn spoke about their future plans for tentpole properties now that Potter has wrapped its run. Their strategy has always been to release a few event films every year and for the most part Harry and company had that covered. But the new game plan will include some oldies but goodies like Green Lantern and the rest of the DC heroes.

Nothing is set in stone but they’re hearing that we can expect a new Batman movie and (finally) The Flash in 2012. The studio is currently talking to directors and trying to get the projects off the ground. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet but when it is we’ll let you know.

On another note, if you’re sick of the 3D trend, too bad it’s going to be here a while. The WB plans on releasing 5 3D movies this year and another 9 in 2011. Horn described the technology as the new standard for the company, which means we’ll be seeing all of our favorite DC comic heroes with a little something extra when they hit the big screen.

There’s a part of me that’s happy to hear about the rest of the DC roster getting their time to shine, but why does it have to be in 3D? I can’t explain the level of disdain I have for this trend right now. It’s getting old real fast Hollywood. Real fast.

The Runaways - Review

This weekend Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart will show the world that they can be more than just teen movie stars with their latest film. The Runaways hits theaters tomorrow, and we’ve gathered reviews from critics and compiled them into one helpful article. It appears that this movie has love it or hate it written all over it, which can be good because it stirs controversy, which leads to conversation that eventually puts asses in the seats.

Take a look at what the top dogs are saying about The Runaways...

The Story:

  • [The Runaways is] pungent and quick on its feet, capturing the clubs, the shag-heavy interiors and the Farrah-haired vibe of mid-1970s Los Angeles in look and spirit. [Chicago Tribune]

  • So this isn’t an in-depth biopic, even though it’s based on Currie’s 1989 autobiography. It’s more of a quick overview of the creation, rise and fall of the Runaways, with slim character development, no extended dialogue scenes, and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll. [Robert Ebert]

  • The film delivers some high velocity punches mainly due to a number of great performances (especially by the magnificent Michael Shannon) but overall doesn’t have the kick it needs to be worthy of the music. The film lacks the brutal honesty of reality and in attempting to sugar coat it, it makes you think you’re watching kiddie porn instead of a group of lost girls discovering themselves. [ScreenCrave]

The Acting:

  • Kristen Stewart, as Joan Jett, channels all of her weird, fidgety Twilight energy into a compelling, tomboyish figure of a girl/woman who just wants to rock as hard—or harder—as her male counterparts (Ms. Jett also served as an executive producer on the film). And Dakota Fanning, all grown up from her Dr. Seuss days, is believable as jail-bait Cheri Currie—half David Bowie, half Brigit Bardot, picked by Svengali-like producer Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) for her looks and style before even going through the trouble of finding out whether she could sing. [The New York Observer]

  • Stewart and Fanning handle the vocals admirably, their live performances blending seamlessly with actual Runaways recordings on the soundtrack. Whatever else you might say about The Runaways, it’s a movie that definitely loves rock ‘n’ roll. [Associated Press]

  • Shannon looks scary and stops the show with his rants, but he’s too endearingly damaged, too nice, to convey the real Fowley’s otherworldly creepiness. [New York Magazine]

Direction:

  • Making her feature debut, Sigismondi conjures up a cheapo New World Pictures vibe that’s utterly persuasive. [Chicago Reader]

  • Writer-director Floria Sigismondi has worked in photography, sculpture and music videos, and she gets behind the eyes and into the nervous systems of her subjects, without turning them into instruments of easy pathos. [Chicago Tribune]

  • [Sigismondi] makes an impressive feature-film directing debut, crafting a brisk, engaging portrait, the story making up for its lack of insight into teen rebel Jett and her bandmates with driving, infectious rhythm. [Associated Press]

Music:

  • The soundtrack (which includes numerous other artists of the era) rocks, naturally. [Variety]

Alice In Wonderland Vs Repo Men - Box Office Predictions

This week there isn’t a movie that stands out as an obvious winner at the box office. Films like The Bounty Hunter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid don’t stand a good chance against the two time champ, Alice in Wonderland. Another new release is Jude Law and Forest Whitaker‘s latest action flick Repo Men, which should be filled with fights, explosions, and of course bloody organs. The question is, can the Repo Men take the top spot from Alice?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid looks like it will be a decent family film, but it has gotten little attention from the press. That isn’t going to encourage audiences to see the movie, especially if they’re not fans of the books. The Bounty Hunter on the other hand can be seen everywhere and it looks terrible. As of late people haven’t really been flocking to Jennifer Aniston or Gerard Butler movies, so this might be a match made in box office hell.

Although I wasn’t a fan of Alice in Wonderland, there are some die hard Johnny Depp supporters out there who will flock to theaters just to see him on the big screen again. Plus, films that cater to both kids and adults tend to enjoy more success at the box office.

Repo Men looks like it will be an action movie with a predictable plot but it’s the only new release this week from the genre. The major issue with the film is its R rating; young kids will be shut out, which might cause them to go for Alice instead.

The verdict: Alice in Wonderland. Even though it’s been in theaters for a few weeks now, the other movies seem too mediocre.

Predators Teaser Trailer Online Now

The first teaser trailer has been released for Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal’s reboot, Predators. Just a few days ago Rodriguez gave an exclusive sneak peek into the new Predator world at the opening of the SXSW Film Festval and now the official teaser is finally here. Are you ready for a new generation of aliens to hunt you down? Here’ s the trailer…

The plot of Predators centers on a reluctant mercenary named Royce, who leads a group of elite warriors who have been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

Is it just me or do they deliberately hide Topher Grace’s face from the camera in this trailer? Every shot he’s in, he’s either in the dark or it’s a quick cut. Maybe they’re trying ease him into the series after his last attempt at crossing over to a franchise bombed (Spider-Man 3). Other than that, the trailer looks OK. We have Laurence Fishburne playing the older, wiser male figure out of the group and Alice Braga as the lone lady. This is an interesting cast and physically it looks like Adrien Brody’s come a long way since his waif days in The Pianist.

Josh Duhamel Returning For Transformers 3

The decision to make Transformers a live action trilogy was set in stone after the success of the first film, so we’re not surprised that the third movie is on its way. What is shocking are the casting decisions being made by director Michael Bay and Paramount. The main characters played by Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox were a given to return but then Tyrese Gibson was confirmed, and now Josh Duhamel. Can someone explain to me why?

During the ShoWest convention that’s taking place as I type, Duhamel announced that he’s been in contact with Bay regarding the next Transformers film and he gave a little update. According to SuperHeroHype, the actor met with the director yesterday and he said the script for the sequel is complete and filming is slated to begin this summer. So, we’re taking that as a confirmation that his character, Major Lennox will return.

Here’s my question, what will he and Gibson do exactly? What was their purpose in Revenge of the Fallen? They were two of the MANY characters we didn’t need to be involved. Their appearance in the first film was understandable, an alien race had descended upon the world, the government had to get in on that. But in the second one they weren’t needed, and they didn’t progress the story at all.

My concern regarding this film continues to grow. Transformers 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2011.

Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia) is a lifelong resident of the tiny, tradition-steeped Bronx enclave of City Island. A family man who makes his living as a corrections officer, Vince longs to become an actor. Ashamed to admit his aspirations to his family, Vince would rather let his fiery wife Joyce (Julianna Margulies) believe his weekly poker games are a cover for an extramarital affair than admit he's secretly taking acting classes in Manhattan. When Vince is asked to reveal his biggest secret in class, he inadvertently sets off a chaotic chain of events that turns his mundane suburban life upside down. Inspired by the exercise, he decides to bring his long-lost ex-con son Tony (Steven Strait) home to meet the family, and it soon becomes clear that everyone—including his college student daughter (Dominik García-Lorido), teenaged son Vinnie, Jr. (Ezra Miller), charismatic acting partner (Emily Mortimer) and drama coach (Alan Arkin)— has something to hide. A perfect storm of deception, half truths and confusion makes Vince and his family members realize that the truth may not set them free, but it is easier to keep track of than all their well-intentioned white lies.

Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger's are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves. "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is based on the trilogy of books by Stieg Larsson and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Tragically, Larsson did not live to see the phenomenon his work has become as he died suddenly in 2004 soon after delivering the manuscripts to his Swedish publisher.

Plot Summary: Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia), who previously filmed Neil Young for Heart of Gold, once again captures Young’s musical and spiritual soul—this time during two shows at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania during the Chrome Dreams II tour. Young surrounds himself with his favorite instruments, played at whim, and a stage set filled with personal icons: a small-scale model of a guitar shop, a red phone and other items. The feeling on the stage is of a favorite place where Young is able to create his music exactly as he wants, supported by long-time touring band friends Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Rick Rosas, Pegi Young and Anthony "Sweet Pea" Crawford, plus an onstage painter portrayed by Eric Johnson. There are delicately offered acoustic numbers like "Sad Movies" and "Mexico"; mesmerizing electric travelogues into the artist's psyche ("No Hidden Path"); searing, chaotic anthems including "Like a Hurricane" and "Cinnamon Girl"; and rarely performed pieces like "Kansas" and "Ambulance Blues" that provide glimpses of Young's less public persona.

Plot Summary: Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock 'n' roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie's tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.

Will the roller-coaster that is the casting for Captain America ever end? Earlier today we reported that “The Office” star John Krasinski was the frontrunner to take on the title character in the live action flick, now we’re hearing that he’s not even in the running and Chris Evans is. So we’ve gone from Jim to The Human Torch, damn these actors with their cross-comic roles. Do you see what Ryan Reynolds has started?

According to Deadline Hollywood, Marvel is still actively looking for the right actor to star in The First Avenger: Captain America, and John Krasinski isn’t it (Thank God!). They must have heard the murmurs from the fan community, because even though he’s a great comedic actor he was not going to cut it as Steve Rogers. Besides him we’re hearing that the other actors who were shortlisted, Chace Crawford, Scott Porter, Michael Cassidy, and Patrick Flueger are no longer candidates.

Now that The Cove has debuted in theaters and its producers have won Oscars, no one in the whale industry is safe from persecution. Not only has the film become an Academy Award winning hit, but it will also appear as a television show on the Animal Planet entitled, “Dolphin Warriors“. The activism doesn’t stop there because according to a report from The New York Times, The Cove team recently orchestrated an undercover sting to bust a sushi restaurant in California that’s been selling illegal whale meat.

The filmmakers took part in a major police operation last week as they were getting ready for the Academy Awards. They coordinated with “law enforcement officials, who said Monday that they were likely to bring charges against the restaurant, The Hump, for violating federal laws against selling marine mammals.”

According to Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the United States attorney for the Central District of California, they’re rapidly moving to bring charges against the restaurant, which could be filed as early as this week. The sushi sting began last fall in October when the documentary’s associate producer Charles Hambleton, heard from friends that The Hump, a Santa Monica restaurant, was serving whale.
